The Awami League (AL) will prioritise ensuring accountability of law enforcement agencies if the party is re-elected in the upcoming polls, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said today (4 January).

"Besides, the ruling party will also focus on upskilling the law enforcement agencies in using technology," she said while addressing countrymen in televised speech on AL's election manifesto.

According to the premier, the AL also plans to prioritise protecting and promoting the practice of democratic systems at all levels; making every effort to keep prices within the purchasing power of all; establishment of agricultural products and food processing industries; increasing efficiency and capacity of the bank, insurance and financial sector; making health services affordable to low-income people, etc.

During her speech, PM Hasina urged the pro-democratic and rule of law believing political parties and institutions not to indulge in and fuel any peculiar ideas that disrupt the country's constitutional process, reports BSS.

"The 12th National Parliamentary Election will be held on January 7. My request to political parties and institutions that believe in democracy and the rule of law, do not indulge and fuel any idiosyncratic/peculiar ideas that disrupt the constitutional process in the country," she said.

"We expect a free, fair and neutral election," she said, referring to the first ever Election Commission (EC) in Bangladesh that was formed by enacting law.

She also said, "The election commission is conducting the election fully independently. Our government is giving all kinds of support to the election commission for conducting fair and peaceful elections."

The Awami League president said, "Today I've come to you to seek your vote for boat, the electoral symbol of Awami League."

Earlier today, addressing an Awami League campaign rally in Narayanganj, the prime minister called upon the people of the country to cast their votes on 7 January to prove that democracy prevails in Bangladesh.

"All of you will go to the polling station, cast your votes, and prove that democracy prevails in Bangladesh," she said.

"Conspiracies against the election persist, aiming to obstruct the upcoming 7 January elections. In the past, there were attempts to subvert the democratic process, with military dictators stripping people of their voting rights and confining the process to the cantonment. It was the Awami League that restored the people's right to vote," added the premier.

Earlier this morning, Awami League leaders and activists gathered at the rally venue, Shamsuzzoha Sports Complex, chanting the "Joy Bangla" slogan.

After the announcement of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's arrival, local leaders and activists started preparing to welcome the prime minister after 15 years.

Processions and public gatherings were seen in several places of the city, including on Link Road, Maleh Road, College Road, Kalibazar, Hospital Road. Most of them are headed to Shamsuzzoha Sports Square.

Narayanganj's Link Road and the surrounding areas of the public rally venue have been covered with festoons, posters and banners.

Shamsuzzoha Sports Complex has been decorated on the occasion of the prime minister's public rally. Separate areas for men and women have been arranged for the rally. Loudspeakers have been installed on various electric poles in the city outside the public rally ground. The streets have been cleaned, and the whole city has been decorated with posters.
